Biography
Peter P. Sordillo, A.B., M.D., M.A., M. Phil, PhD, M.S. is a physician, philosopher, physicist and writer. As a physician, his specialty is the treatment of extremely rare cancers, with classic papers on uncommon tumors such as lymphangiosarcoma, extraosseous osteogenic sarcoma, malignant schwannoma (165 patients), lymphomatoid granulomatosis and primary hemangiosarcoma of the spleen. He has cared for more than 80,000 cancer patients overall, and he is widely recognized for his research and publications on sarcomas, mesothelioma, gastrointestinal tumors and glioblastoma. As a member of the solid tumor (medical oncology), biophysics and epidemiology departments at The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Sordillo has designed, written and directed more than 50 phase II clinical trials of experimental cancer medications and participated in many more. He has also done extensive bench research. Dr. Sordillo is currently researching novel treatments for cancer and for cardiac diseases at SignPath Pharma, Inc., a biotechnology company, where he is Vice-President and Chief Scientific Officer. Dr. Sordillo has published more than 175 journal articles and conference proceedings as well as of nine book chapters, and is co-editor of two books about new advances in physics, including the recently published “Biophotonics, Tryptophan and Disease” from Elsevier and “Short-Wavelength Infrared Windows for Biomedical Applications” from SPIE Press. Dr. Sordillo's academic appointments have included Instructor in Biophysics at the Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences; Assistant Professor of Medicine, Cornell University Medical College; Associate Professor of Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and Associate Professor of Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as an expert in the treatment of patients with medical diseases, as well as an expert in the treatment of patients with cancer.
In addition to his M.D., Dr. Sordillo holds 3 graduate degrees in philosophy (Columbia University). Dr. Sordillo studied for 12 years at Columbia with the renowned philosopher Bernard Berofsky (thesis advisor), the philosopher Charles Larmore, and the physicist and philosopher David Albert, while he was working full-time as a Sloan-Kettering physician and also working as a composer, arranger and musician (keyboard, synthesizer) in several jazz and progressive rock groups. In Dr. Sordillo’s PhD thesis, he puts forth a novel theory of causality, “An Identity Theory of Causation,” based on the principles of conservation of energy and momentum and on the argument that no genuine cases of causal overdetermination can exist. He also shows his theory is not only applicable to Newtonian physics, but to quantum mechanics as well. From Columbia, he obtained qualifications in epistemology, logic, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of science, French and German.
Dr. Sordillo was awarded his fifth graduate degree, in physics, at NYU, with a concentration in quantum information theory and quantum computing, and a special interest in quantum field theory and ten-dimensional string theory, also done while he was working full-time as a physician. He did extensive work subsequently for more than 10 years as a research consultant at The Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers in the Physics Department at City University of New York, where he has used the supercontimuum laser along with fluorescent, resonant Raman and time-resolved absorption spectroscopy to study neurodegenerative diseases, cardiac diseases and cancer.
Dr. Sordillo is a prolific writer. He worked as a reporter and music and arts reviewer for several local newspapers and periodicals. He has published numerous non-fiction articles, poems, prose-poems, and short stories in prestigious literary journals, including in The Iowa Review, regarded as one of the top poetry journals in the world, as well as in Potomac Review, Bellevue Literary Review, Carolina Quarterly, The Yorkville Anthology of New Writers and many others. In addition to writing free verse and sonnets, he also frequently writes in traditional French fixed forms, including villanelles, triolets, rondeaus, and rondelles. Dr. Sordillo was finalist for the 2013 Bordigtera Poetry Prize, awarded for the best manuscript by an American poet of Italian descent.
Dr. Sordillo is married and has a son and two daughters. He is an avid basketball player, and regularly participates in extreme exercise and high-intensity interval training.
